Fall is an excellent time to control perennial and biennial invasive weeds with Milestone® VM. Late summer and fall rains in many areas of the Central Plains in 2010 will provide land managers with a good opportunity to extend their application season.
Why treat with Milestone VM in the fall?
- For plants that produce rosettes in the fall, such as spotted knapweed, fall applications of Milestone VM will control rosettes and provide residual control into the next spring for newly germinating seedlings.
- Research has shown fall applications can be extremely effective with Milestone VM at labeled rates of 5 to 7 fluid ounces per acre.
- Tank mixing with another herbicide is not necessary.
- Fall application timing offers more time to treat with other summer field work completed.
What defines a fall application?
This varies depending on your target weed species, location, elevation, aspect and other climatic conditions. Generally, fall applications can be made once the plants have started new basal growth after setting seed or completing their seasonal growth, usually lower temperatures are occurring and a light frost may have occurred. It is a good idea to wait for moisture to stimulate growth of rosettes or regrowth of perennial plants.
